Malcolm Arnold

If I had relied upon "The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians", which bills itself as the "Ultimate Authority on all Aspects of Music", then I would have never discovered Malcolm Arnold's sensational body of work.

In a sneering and brief entry this august publication brushes him aside as a minor composer of film music. Professional jealousy at play I expect.

Luckily I had discovered his music first at what used to be a great music discovery site (www.emusic.com), and I was immediately taken by Arnold's energy, imagination, and fantastic melding of pop music, celtic music and latin rhythms into the symphonic language.

Malcolm Arnold also wrote a guitar concerto for Julian Bream which has many jazz influenced passages which are reminiscent in parts of Django Reinhardt's guitar work.
