Portrait Artist Grade 1

Entry requirements: "Masterwork Artist Grade 1" certificate and "Floral Artist Grade 1" certificate.

You must complete:

  • Portrait Drawing 101 (one session)
  • 3 paintings from the set list - Note: all the painting lists are subject to change.

Description: People often ask about portrait painting and my reply is "you need certain skill sets to enjoy it", and this is true. Now, by working through Masterwork Artist Grade 1 and Floral Artist Grade 1 you will have enough skills in brush work and colour mixing to tackle portraits and have fun!

The human face is something we see every day. We are really good at telling one face from another.

Why then are they so difficult to draw or paint?

Two reasons:

  1. Seeing: The right brain keeps jumping in and making it hard to actually see the face.
  2. Rendering: To express a face in paint requires some sophisticated tool sets.

Portrait Artist Grade 1: Repertoire

Portrait Drawing 101 - you must do this session before your portrait paintings.
Description: Learn to draw a face in any orientation, and add form. Get familiar with the shapes in the eyes, nose, mouth and ears.
