What I've tried to do is apply some of the things I have learned about how classical composers tell stories without words and tell my own tales through the guitar and based on the basic material of the songs. Hence - "A Suite for Jazz Guitar".

"I was first attracted to the guitar, like most people, by the sounds of contemporary folk music... that is to say rock music.

Guitar bands of the 1970's made the guitar a force equal to an orchestra and players like Eric Clapton developed styles which equalled the expressiveness of the best of violin music.

Not long after discovering Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Cream I bought an LP recording of Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring" conducted by Eugene Goosens. It was the same story to me a wild and intoxicating mix of sound colours and exciting rhythms.

My musical quest continued over the years and I gained a grasp of and performed in many styles. In the the 1990's I discovered the work of Kazuhito Yamashita who played Stravinsky, Mussorgsky and Dvorak's orchestral works on the solo guitar. He played everything that was in the original music including reproducing the effects of the orchestral string sections with new multiple stringed tremelo techniques.

For a time this had me floored! Yamashita had taken such a giant leap forward that he had in many senses rewritten the book of what is possible on the instrument. From accounts Liszt and Paganini had much the same effect on their contemporaries.

People got over the shock and moved on, integrating their innovations into the literature and methodology of teaching. In 100 years time I imagine that Yamashita's standard will be similar to that of Liszt today - "merely" what is expected of competent classical performers.

Everywhere you look guitarists are redefining what is possible on the instrument. It is a fantastic collective effort in human creativity and ingenuity.

So how does all that bring us to this album?"

Well, I like programmatic music, music that tells a story.

Funnily enough I would rather hear it without the words most of the time!

All the songs here were popular hits in their time and have remained favourite vehicles for improvisation by jazz performers ever since. So they have stories already.

Autumn Leaves - Johnny Mercer. In a quiet corner they engage in a spirited dialogue. Their laughter adds to the general gaiety.
Misty - Erroll Garner. They look deep into one another's eyes and strong feelings pass between them.
Night and Day - Cole Porter. Time to dance again and they twirl and cavort.
Black Orpheus - Luiz Bonfa. Their two bodies unite in the eternal dance.
Body and Soul - Johnny Green. Late at night asleep their souls rise from their bodies and journey to higher states of bliss. Wondrous vistas unfold - or is it a dream?
Stella by Starlight - Victor Young. The yin and yang of love. Time stands still momentarily until all that can be heard is blood rushing through their veins.
Have You Met Miss Jones? - Richard Rodgers. A new day dawns. The sun appears birds sing. The world is rejoined and then takes on a pace of it's own.
Autumn in New York - Vernon Duke. Walking in the park. All around is bright and green. The rich harmony of nature.
Wave - Antonio Carlos Jobim. The day flows into a gentle evening. The cycle is complete.
